During 2022 to 2025, Umeå University will invest SEK 18 million in research infrastructure that has the potential to become of national interest. That is, resources that enable research for several research groups and different projects in one or more research areas. Do you want to apply for funding? This year's deadline is June 6 at 17:00.
To be able to apply during this first year, the research infrastructure in question must correspond to the needs that have been identified during the Swedish Research Councils (VR's) call "Needs inventory of research infrastructure of national interest" and been given one of the following grades:
- A1: The described need could be fulfilled by an infrastructure of national interest, and the thematic area is considered ready for call.
- A2: The described need could be fulfilled by an infrastructure of national interest within VR's remit, but is at the moment not prioritized by VR.
- A3: The described need could be fulfilled by an infrastructure of national interest, but the thematic area is not considered ready for call.
How much can we apply for?
You can apply for SEK 600 000–900 000 per year, for at least two years. State the yearly amount of money applied for.
Please note that the amount applied for has to include co-financing from your faculty, which itself needs to contribute 30 percent. Therefore, a letter of intent from the faculty is also needed.
What costs can be covered?
The granted amount of money can be used for:
- Investments in equipment or software.
- Management and maintenance costs for the infrastructure.
- Skills development for existing staff.
- Staff costs linked to infrastructure management.
- Development and networking to strengthen the infrastructure, to be able to achieve status of national interest.
Evaluation criteria
The research infrastructure shall:
- Have an organization, a management and a responsible host institution.
- Be available to researchers at Umeå University on equal terms, for example when it comes to user fees.
- Be used by researchers/research groups and others from one or more faculties at Umeå University or other higher education institutions/external partners.
- Be able to provide users with training or regular theoretical and practical courses at different levels linked to the research infrastructure.
- Have a long-term plan for the use, funding, development, evaluation and possible decommissioning of the research infrastructure.
- Have a plan for how the grant applied for can strengthen the infrastructure to reach national status.

Who will evaluate our application?
After the call is closed, the Research Support and Collaboration Office will compile the applications received and check that they meet the evaluation criteria. The compilation is then sent to RIS (the Council for Research Infrastructure), which prepares a proposal.
A group of senior evaluators will rank the prepared proposal, which in turn is endorsed by FOSTRA. Finally, the Vice-Chancellor decides who will be granted funding.
