Reimbursement of medical expenses - taxable benefit

You can be reimbursed by the University for certain medical expenses. For example, visits to the doctor, dentist and psychologist under certain circumstances. The reimbursement amount depends on the type of medical expense you incur. This form of reimbursement is a taxable benefit.

In order to receive reimbursement according to the list below, you must submit your claim for reimbursement no later than two years after the cost incurred.

Medical expenses and reimbursement levels

Doctoral treatment

The maximum you can receive is SEK 95 per appointment.

Dental care

The maximum you can receive is SEK 95 per appointment for oral surgical treatment. This treatment must have been provided at a hospital or odontology faculty. The receipt must state that the appointment falls under the high-cost protection in Swedish healthcare (Sw. frikortsgrundande).

Psychological
treatment

The maximum you can receive is SEK 95 per appointment if you receive treatment by a licensed psychiatrist, psychologist or psychotherapist after referral from a doctor.

Physiotherapy

The maximum you can receive is SEK 55 per appointment if you receive treatment from a licensed physiotherapist after referral from a doctor.

Hospital treatment

You can receive a maximum of SEK 70 per day you have been admitted to a hospital.

Prescriptions

The costs of your medical prescriptions as long as they are covered by the act on pharmaceutical benefits (high-cost protection (Sw. högkostnadsskydd).

In order to be reimbursed for your costs, you need to scan and submit your receipts to the payroll administration through the self-reporting system PASS under the headline My page > Healthcare allowance. The receipt must state your name and personal identity number as well as what type of healthcare activity was in question. Reimbursements are only paid for healthcare or treatment that you have received from healthcare providers affiliated to the healthcare authority's high-cost protection scheme.

Reimbursement for prescription pharmaceuticals

If you are prescribed pharmaceuticals that are covered by the high-cost protection, you can be reimbursed for the full amount.

Costs for 2022–2023

In order to receive reimbursement for the costs incurred for prescriptions you must submit the prescription specification obtained from the pharmacy in the self-reporting system PASS under My page > Healthcare allowance.

Costs must be verified through a prescription declaration or a receipt from the pharmacy.The specification must state your name, your personal identity number and the sum you paid. The matter will be forwarded to the payroll administration.

You can claim reimbursement for prescription medicine costs incurred in 2022–2023 by claiming reimbursement no later than on 31 March 2024. This applies to costs incurred up until and including 31 December 2023. 

Costs incurred from 1 January 2024 according to new agreement

The new agreement on reimbursement for prescription medicine costs takes effect on 1 January 2024. To receive reimbursement for costs incurred thereafter, you must submit one collected claim for reimbursement of all costs incurred during that year. This claim must be submitted no later than on 31 January the year after the costs incurred. Costs must, according to the new routines, be verified through a register extract from the high-cost protection database.

Reimbursement for hospital treatment

If you have needed hospital treatment, you can receive a maximum of SEK 70 for each day you were admitted to a hospital. In order to receive reimbursement for hospital treatment, you must scan and submit a copy of your invoice through PASS under My page > Healthcare allowance. The matter will be forwarded to the payroll administration.
