Reimbursements during sick leave

When you are on sick leave, reimbursements are being paid from the university or from the Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan). This page explains what salary payments you will receive at different stages of a period of sick leave, and what actions you need to take in order to get the reimbursements you are entitled to.

Sick pay (first 14 days of sick leave)

During the first 14 days of illness, your reimbursement is paid by the university – this is called sick pay. Sick pay amounts to 80 percent of your ordinary salary.

Qualifying deduction

A qualifying period deduction is made, which reduces sick pay by 20 percent of the weekly compensation at the beginning of a period of sick leave.

Rules for qualifying deduction

In the event of sick leave, the employer makes a so-called qualifying period deduction which reduces the average weekly compensation in the form of sick pay by 20 percent. For the vast majority of employees, the qualifying period deduction corresponds to one working day.

Rules for qualifying deduction in the event of returning sick leave

If a full qualifying deduction was taken from the previous sick-leave period, no further qualifying deduction should be made for the new period. If no full qualifying deduction was taken from the previous sick-leave period, a qualifying deduction should be made for the new period until a full qualifying deduction has been made.
