You are eligible to apply if you are employed by Umeå University and have at least 5 years of teaching experience in higher education, equivalent to at least 2 years of full-time teaching. Also, you must have taken courses in higher education pedagogy equivalent to at least 10 weeks study or 15 hp.
The overall goal for Umeå University's educational qualification model is to contribute to ongoing educational quality development by:
- motivating teachers to develop highly qualified pedagogical skills
- acknowledging and rewarding teachers with highly qualified pedagogical skills
- encouraging departments and faculties to create good conditions for pedagogical development
- having clear criteria for pedagogical excellence
- assessing and rewarding excellence based on the criteria for pedagogical excellence
The model has two levels: recognised university teacher and distinguished university teacher. The application for appointment as a distinguished university teacher may only be submitted by teachers who have previously been appointed as a recognised university teacher. Each level has a number of criteria regarding pedagogical skills. In order to be appointed, all criteria of the level in question must be met. An appointment renders a salary increase for the applicant. The salary increase is decided every four years by the Vice-Chancellor.
The Pedagogical qualification board, consisting of members from each faculty, has the overall responsibility regarding quality. Decisions on appointments in the model are made by each faculty.
Application

The application should consist of:
- a main text including appendices
- a pedagogical CV
- a statement from the Head of Department regarding eligibility
The application is made via the e-recruitment system. Call for applications opens twice a year and the last day to apply is usually in the middle of February and the middle of September.
Each faculty processes the applications and only complete applications are sent to external experts for assessment. One external expert assesses an application for recognised university teacher and two external experts assess an application for distinguished university teacher.
Based on the expert statements, the board will issue their recommendations to the faculties. The faculty decides about appointment based on the board's recommendation.
Teachers who want guidance on how to make a pedagogical portfolio or be an assessor of pedagogical skills can turn to the Centre for Educational Development (UPL). Questions regarding applications and results of the decisions will be handled by each faculty office.

Validation of other educational qualification models
A teacher with educational qualification from other higher education institutions, either in Sweden or abroad, can apply to have it validated at Umeå University. Applications for validation are to be submitted via the e-recruitment system through calls that take place twice per year.
