Rehabilitation

If you are ill or injured, you may need rehabilitation. The measures that may be considered relevant depend on your needs. On this page you can find more information about who is involved in the rehabilitation process.

Rehabilitation is a collective term for all medical, psychological, social and work-oriented measures that can help an employee that is sick or injured. The goal is to regain our working ability and that you will be able to return to work. The employer is responsible for the work life-oriented rehabilitation of its employees.

Tell your manager in an early stage

If you feel that you're health at work is declining, it is important to talk to your manager at an early stage. Together you can examine the need for work adaptations or support. The goal is for you to maintain or regain the ability to work and avoid sick leave.

Your manager assesses what is possible to implement in view of the business and other employees.

You can also contact the university's Occupational Health Care Service for support.

Support in rehabilitation

Successful rehabilitation requires close cooperation between several parties. Your active participation and the manager's commitment are important parts of the rehabilitation process.

Your manager is responsible for the rehabilitation work being carried out at your department/unit. Through various rehabilitation measures, the manager can make it easier for you to remain in your job or return to work more quickly in connection with a period of sick leave.

Your responsibility in a rehabilitation process

You have a responsibility to:

  • Register sick in PASS and notify your department/unit. Procedures for who to notify should be in place at your department/unit. In case of sick leave absence longer than 7 calendar days, a medical certificate must be submitted to the employer. Read more about sick leave
  • Submit a medical certificate to the employer.
  • Provide the necessary information to the manager to clarify the need for rehabilitation.
  • Actively participate in the planning and implementation of your own rehabilitation.
  • Have contact with the workplace during your sick leave period.

Your manager's responsibility in the rehabilitation process

The manager has a responsibility to:

  • Investigate your rehabilitation needs.
  • Plan and implement rehabilitation and adaptation measures in consultation with you and any other concerned parties.
  • Participate in meetings with you and, for example, the occupational health care service and the Social Insurance Agency.
  • Document all meetings, plans, adaptation measures, etc.
  • Keep in touch with and invite you to the workplace throughout your sick leave period.

In the rehabilitation work, it is important that all information of importance is documented. This means documenting, for example, meetings with you, your rehabilitation plans and rehabilitation measures. The purpose of the documentation is to be able to follow up the rehabilitation work. Umeå University uses a system support called Adato for this.

Others parties in your rehabilitation process

HR support at the department

The HR support at your department can support both you and your head of department/manager through the rehabilitation process.

The trade unions

If you want, you can get support from your trade union when talking with your employer about adaptations, changed tasks and working conditions, as well as at meetings with the occupational health service, the Social Insurance Agency, etc.

Swedish social security agency (Försäkringskassan)

The insurance company can also be part of your rehabilitation process. The Swedish social security agency:

  • Assesses your work ability and rehabilitation needs as well as your right to compensation.
  • Can call a reconciliation meeting to investigate the need for working life-oriented measures such as work aids.
  • Coordinates efforts from the health and medical care, the employer, the Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen), the social services and other parties so that you can return to your work.

Treating physician

The attending physician:

  • Assesses the employee's ability to work
  • Writes sick certificate.

Privacy and Consent

Confidentiality applies in rehabilitation processes. The employer can, with your consent, contact healthcare providers. It is important that both parties strive for a trusting dialogue during the rehabilitation process.

Occupational injury and incident

If you are injured at work or experience that an event is risky it is important that you notify your manager. There are also some other things to consider.
