Registration for the Faculty of Science and Technology's doctoral courses this autumn has opened. The last day to register is Sunday 12 May.

Umeå University currently has three official names: Umeå universitet in Swedish, Umeå University in English and Ubmejen universitiähta in Ume Sámi. In some contexts, an abbreviation is needed and for a long time, three versions have been in use: Umu, UMU and UmU. The University's Language Council now recommends that UMU is used if and when an abbreviation is needed.

Umeå Center for Microbial Research, UCMR, welcomes new research leaders at Umeå University with an interest in microbial research and infection biology. Researchers interested in playing an active role in UCMR can apply to join.

In recent weeks, experts from the Swedish Research Council's (VR) review panels have shared their experiences and tips to help researchers write stronger applications. Although the subject areas varied, some common denominators emerged in all groups. If you missed the meetings, you can find some of the advice here.

Are you a PhD student at Umeå University interested in a course on communication and transdisciplinary methods, as well as a field trip in Rovaniemi, Finland? If so, the Arctic Graduate School welcomes you to join.

All doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows and supervisors at the Faculty of Science and Technology are welcome to participate. The day will be divided into a morning session for PhD students (open to postdocs) and an afternoon session for supervisors and those planning to become supervisors soon, with a shared lunch in between.

At the Faculty Board meeting on 13 March, the annual account for 2023 was determined. The result was SEK -49.3 million, which can be compared with SEK -43.5 million the previous year.

"It gives me the freedom to conduct the research I like and find valuable," he says.

While participating in the educational conference ACS Spring 2024, Lisa Lundin and Stina Jansson take the opportunity to build on the Master of Science in Technical chemistry engineering programme's collaboration with the University of Central Florida in Orlando, USA.

12 teachers from the Faculty of Science and Technology will have their say when Umeå University recruits a new vice-chancellor. They are part of the Consultative Assembly, which has its first meeting on 15 March.

On 16 Februari this year, the Vice-Chancellor decided to establish the Torgny and Lena Stigbrand prize at Umeå University. The prize of SEK 100,000 will be awarded at Umeå University's annual celebration for a period of three years, for the first time in 2024 and the last time in 2026.

During 2023, four new docents were appointed at the Faculty of Science and Technology: Lili Jiang and Loïs Vanhée at the Department of Computing Science, and Peter Lind and Christer Larsson at the Department of Molecular Biology.
