In March 2016, a Swedish section of SAR was launched. Umeå University is part of the network along with eleven other higher education institutions.
In situations when researchers are discriminated, censored or threatened, the network can offer temporary housing and employment at universities in other countries. An important cornerstone is also to work preventively by documenting incidents, spreading information and current statistics on the situation in different countries in order to get more aware of, and involved in, the work, for academic freedom.
Researchers who need protection must register directly with the network.
The international network Scholars at Risk was established in 2000 in Chicago, USA. Today, the base is at New York University, and nearly 400 universities and colleges are members.
The following Swedish higher education institutions are part of the network: University of Gothenburg (coordinator of the Swedish section), Umeå University, University of Borås, Dalarna University, University West, Karlstad University, Karolinska Institutet, Konstfack - University of Arts, Crafts and Design, Lund University, Malmö University, Stockholm University and Uppsala University.
What can Umeå University do within the network?
Hosting a scholar at risk usually requires long-term preparation and resources. Due to the war in Ukraine, a working group with representatives from the faculties and the University Administration will be formed to plan and coordinate the internal work of hosting SAR researchers at Umeå University.
At-risk teachers and researchers who are either abroad or in Sweden, and who want support from the network, must submit an application directly to SAR:
