Caring for sick children

You will not receive pay from the university for the days on which you are at home caring for your child. Instead, you have the option of receiving benefit from the Social Insurance Agency to compensate for lost income, known as temporary parental benefit.

You can receive temporary parental benefit from the Social Insurance Agency if you have to stay at home to care for children when:

• your child is ill or infected
• the person who usually takes care of your child, e.g. a parent who works from home, a childminder or a relative, is ill or infected
• you are visiting a preventive paediatric healthcare service
• the parent who normally cares for the child has to attend a doctor's surgery with siblings under the age of 12.

Report temporary parental leave and apply for temporary parental benefit

When you need to take time off to care for your sick children, you need to:

• report care of your sick child to the university in PASS
• report care of your sick child to the Social Insurance Agency
• apply for benefit via the Social Insurance Agency

You can report and submit your application to the Social Insurance Agency via their self-service system online, by text message, in the MyPages app or over the phone.

Benefit

When you have to stay at home to look after a sick child and are receiving temporary sickness benefit from the Social Insurance Agency, salary deductions will be made for every working day you are away, exactly as if you were at home sick yourself. You will then receive a payment from the Social Insurance Agency for every working day you spend at home with your sick child. This payment from the Social Insurance Agency for the temporary care of children is 80% of the income entitling you to sickness benefit for every working day you are absent in order to care for children.
