New terms and conditions for saved holiday days soon to take effect

8 November 2017

As of January 2018, the rules have changed as to how many saved holiday (vacation) days one may have. In accordance with the terms and conditions, no employees will be allowed to have more than 30 saved holiday days. If you have more than 30 saved holiday days on 31 December 2017, you have five years to reduce your amount of saved days. After 31 December 2022, no employee may have more than 30 saved holiday days.

An employee who is entitled to more than 20 paid holiday days for a particular calendar year may save one or more of the excess days. However, as of January 1 2018, no employees will be able to save more than 30 holiday days.

However, there is a transitional agreement which states that an employee that has more 30 saved holiday days on 31 December 2017 has a five year period to use their excess days.

The new terms are as follows:

  • employees that have 30 saved holiday days on 31 December 2017 must use their holiday days to a sufficient extent during 2018 so that the saved days do not exceed 30 days by the end of the 2018 calendar year.
  • employees that have more than 31 saved holiday days on 31 December 2017 may use the excess days during a five year period so that he/she will have a maximum of 30 saved holiday days on 31 December 2022.

The change will be regulated in the general agreements on pay and benefits for government employees (Villkorsavtal and Villkorsavtal-T) and will take effect on 1 January 2018.

Umeå University offers the opportunity to reach an individual agreement with employees about switching saved holiday days to occupational pension. For more information, see handläggningsordning för enskilda överenskommelser, established 2016-04-12.
