Doctoral education includes credit-bearing modules of at least 30 credits for the doctoral degree. These are earned through compulsory doctoral courses (see page x) and other credit-bearing activities:

• other doctoral courses, internal and external, are awarded the credit assigned each course
• active participation in departmental seminars and journal clubs, which can provide a total of 12 credits (equivalent to 1 seminar per week during term time throughout the course of study)
• participation in national/international conferences with own presentation gives 1.5 credits per conference, max 6 credits in total
• research visits with a research group at another university provides 1.5 credits per week, maximum 6 credits in total
• higher education teaching-and-learning training participation (UPL courses or equivalent) provides 1.5 credits per week, maximum 6 credits in total. However, teaching students as a doctoral student does not count for credit.

The doctoral courses to be taken by the doctoral student are specified in the individual study plan (per above). Courses at other faculties at Umeå University and at other universities in Sweden or abroad may be included in the programme. At least 15 of the 30 credits required by the faculty must be courses. It is important to plan time to attend the courses already upon admission. The examiner decides which courses can be included in the individual study plan.

Doctoral courses and other credit-bearing modules for those admitted between 31 August 2015 and 30 June 2021

Doctoral education comprises 240 credits of which at least 30 credits are obtained through compulsory doctoral courses and other credit-bearing modules. Compulsory courses/modules are:

• Introduction to doctoral studies, 1 credit:
• Theory of Science, Theory of Knowledge and Research Methodology, 3 credits
• Ethics in Research, 3 credits
• One presentation at a national/international conference, 1.5 credits
• In addition to the above, the following courses may be compulsory:
• A national course in laboratory animal science is compulsory if laboratory animals are included in one of the doctoral student's sub-projects
• Course in Good Clinical Practice (GCP), 4.5 credits, is compulsory for doctoral students conducting clinical research involving patient contact
• A basic course in statistics at doctoral level is compulsory if statistics has not been included in undergraduate studies.

The other courses and modules that can be accepted in doctoral studies are determined by the examiner. In addition, the doctoral student must participate in seminar and journal club activities during his/her studies.
