An overall limit to stop high roaming costs

6 October 2015

Umeå University is introducing an overall limit for data roaming on all university mobile cellular subscriptions. This is to prevent high roaming costs, something that happened recently to a member of staff on a work-related trip to New Zealand. In this case, Telia has informed that they will reimburse SEK 90,000 of the total amount.

Arne Vedefors, Head of Unit at the IT Office and in charge of telephony at Umeå University, welcomes the news from Telia.

"I am pleased to hear that Telia is reimbursing the majority of the roaming charges in the current case. In future, there is an overall limit on all university mobile cellular subscriptions for this not to be repeated," says Arne Vedefors.

The investigation that has been carried out as a consequence of the invoice at hand showed that a total of 30 of the university's 1,100 mobile cellular subscriptions had no overall limit for roaming.
The routines about who is authorised to remove the limitations and change technical specifications with the supplier has been changed over the years. For that reason, the investigation has not been able to establish why there was an insufficient overall limitation on those cellular subscriptions.

"We have now stipulated SEK 5,000 as an overall limit to subscriptions where there is an expressed need of higher costs for roaming. All other subscriptions are limited to SEK 500, and this is now impossible to alter. We will also provide information to staff about the additional services available in order to use roaming in a controlled way on visits abroad," says Arne Vedefors.
