Increased funds for education at bachelor's level

3 September 2015

According to a government decision earlier this summer, the university gets an increased funding cap and a new budget appropriation to improve the quality of education at bachelor's level. This week, the Vice-Chancellor has approved the plan on how the funds should be distributed.

At the end of June, the government decided on a change of last year's public service agreement. The decision means that the university gets another SEK 1.6 million in funding cap for 2015, and a new budget appropriation of SEK 6 million for qualitative improvements for certain education areas.

The Vice-Chancellor has now decided that the increased funding cap should be distributed based upon this year's existing model of resource allocation, which implies an increased financial framework for all faculties and the Umeå School of Education.

The new budget appropriation of SEK 6 million is, according to the public service agreement, earmarked to improve the quality of educations in the arts and social sciences as well as teacher education and pre-school education. The budget appropriation is distributed by the funding levels being increased by different amounts for the above mentioned education areas. The distribution for each individual faculty/Umeå School of Education is based on the number of full-time students for 2014 (see table below).

Distribution of budget appropriation for improvement of quality (in even thousands):

Faculty/Umeå School of Education Budget year 2015
Faculty of Arts 946.7
Faculty of Social Sciences 2,754.8
Faculty of Medicine 0.0
Faculty of Science and Technology 9.8
Umeå School of Education 2,308.7
Sum 6,020
