Calls: Financing of doctoral student in collaborative projects, and seed money

11 June 2020

The Industrial Doctoral School (IDS) at Umeå University calls for applications for funding of doctoral research projects as well as seed money to establish collaborations.

Doctoral research projects will be funded jointly by the university and an external partner; each part will contribute 50 percent of the doctoral candidate's salary. IDS also announces seed money for researchers in order to establish and develop a collaboration with an external party, with the aim of submitting an application to IDS doctoral candidate project.

Doctoral candidate projects

The Industrial Doctoral School (IDS) promotes research cooperation between researchers, industry and the public sector through jointly funded doctoral projects. The doctoral candidate works for four years to answer a research question that is of mutual interest to the partners. Normally, IDS and the external party fund 50 percent each of the doctoral student's salary.

Researchers at Umeå University who have the right to act as the principal supervisor for a doctoral candidate are eligible to apply for doctoral candidate funding.

There is an opportunity to apply for an additional 25 percent funding from the university if the external party is a non-profit organization. This requires a special justification describing the reason why the external party is not able to finance a 50 percent doctoral student's salary.

The application can be submitted until 17 September 2021. Closing date is subject to change. Applications are processed on an ongoing basis and decisions are made at a subsequent steering group meeting.

Seed money to establish collaborations

A step towards a joint PhD-project is to establish a contact with an external partner and investigate the prerequisites for a more extensive cooperation. Seed money can be applied for up to SEK 50,000, including overhead, to establish and develop a collaboration with an external party, with the aim of applying to an IDS doctoral candidate project in the future. External party does not need to be consulted, but it is an advantage if there is an established contact. The funding can be used to cover, for example travel costs or working hours, and can be used within six months.

Researchers at Umeå University who have the right to act as the principal supervisor for a doctoral candidate are eligible to apply for doctoral candidate funding.
