KAW project 2022: pre-application to the Faculty of Science and Technology

16 September 2021

The Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation announces funding for research projects of high scientific potential in science, technology, and medicine. Departments at the Faculty of Science and Technology are invited to nominate projects to the faculty no later than October 4.

The Faculty of Science and Technology may nominate up to five projects to Umeå University, which then makes a selection of which projects to nominate to the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation.

Who can be nominated?

A project group consists of two to five researchers who collaborate on a scientific question. Projects are prioritized where the researchers' complementary competencies make it possible to address hypotheses and issues in new research areas, especially of a cross-border nature where Swedish researchers have an international leading position, and where each individual researcher would find it difficult to tackle the issue him-herself.

A project must have an independent objective and not only constitute additional financing for activities that have already begun.

The nomination process

Nominations to the faculty should include:
• Name and curriculum vitae for all researchers in the project
• Project description on four pages written in English (a final application to the foundation can be extended to ten pages).
• An overall budget: Estimate of the total amount applied for, including premises costs and overhead, as well as each applicants share of the budget.
• Letter from the head of department stating support, and thus is responsibility, for the department's part of the co-financing.

Project proposals should be sent to the research coordinator robert.johansson@umu.se at the Dean's office at the Faculty of Science and Technology no later than 4 October 2021.

Faculties at the university will submit their nominations, including documentation, no later than 26 October to the Unit for Research Support and Collaboration, which will make the nominations available to all participating faculties.
