Call for research infrastructure with potential to become of national interest

During 2022 to 2025, Umeå University will invest SEK 18 million in research infrastructure with the potential to meet a national/international need. That is, infrastructure that could enable research for many different research groups and projects within one or more research areas. The autumn call for tenders closes on October 31 at 24:00.

The call is aimed at local research infrastructures at Umeå University that have the potential to be used nationally/internationally. 

How much can we apply for? 

The maximum amount is SEK 900,000 per year for two years. Please note that the amount applied for must include include co-financing from your faculty, which itself needs to contribute 30 percent. Therefore, a letter of intent from the faculty is also required.

The allocated funds may be used for:

  • Investments in equipment or software.
  • Management and maintenance costs for the infrastructure.
  • Skills development for existing staff.
  • Staff costs linked to infrastructure management.
  • Development and networking to strengthen the infrastructure, in order to achieve status of national interest.

Evaluation criteria

The application must clearly state how and to what extent the infrastructure meets the following criteria today. It should also explain how the funds granted will be used to meet even more criteria.

  • Does the infrastructure have a management, an organization and a responsible host institution?
  • Is the infrastructure available to all researchers at Umeå University on equal terms, for example in terms of user fees?
  • Is the infrastructure used by researchers/research groups and users from one or more faculties at Umeå University or by other higher education institutions/external partners?
  • Does the infrastructure provide users with training or regular theoretical and practical courses at different levels linked to its use?
  • Does the infrastructure have a long-term plan to meet the needs of researchers?
  • Is there a long-term plan for the use, funding, development, and evaluation of the research infrastructure?
  • Does the infrastructure have a plan for how the grant applied for could strengthen the infrastructure to reach national/international status?
