Early stage doctoral students: The doctoral student’s role

This is module 1 of the Development programme for doctoral students aimed at doctoral students who are at an early stage of their doctoral education (terms 1–2) and is undertaken in collaboration with supervisors.

The module encompasses a total of nine hours for doctoral students and five hours for supervisors. All sessions are held in English.

Module content

Module 1 aims to strengthen the doctoral students' ability to lead themselves and manage the requirements and expectations that the doctoral education entails. The module is open to doctoral students at an early stage of the doctoral education (terms 1–2) and consists of three integrated seminars/themes with focus on:

  1. Facing new conditions and demands
  2. Accessing one's abilities and finding strategies to develop them
  3. Meeting and managing difficult situations

The module thus helps to develop an understanding of the doctoral student's role in its context.

Expected outcome

After having completed the module, participants should:

  • Have a basic understanding of the occasionally conflicting goals and expectations that the doctoral education entails.
  • Have developed an understanding of stress management and the importance of balance and recovery.
  • Have developed self-awareness and an ability to manage challenging situations.

Form of instruction

This module is held by professionals with broad expertise in psychology and extensive experience of doctoral students' unique work environment and work conditions. The teaching consists of a combination of introductory lectures, seminars, and workshops where examples are taken from the doctoral students' own context.

As part of the training, participants are expected to work with preparatory assignments and home assignments, partly in interaction with their supervisor.
