To support doctoral students in the final phase

The seminar is divided in two parts and is aimed at supervisors whose doctoral students have been admitted to the Development programme for doctoral students and who are at the final phase of the doctoral education (term 7 and onwards).

The overall aim with the seminar is to provide supervisors with tools and practical advice to increase the doctoral students' ability to manage their position as a doctoral student and thereby enable a continued career after graduation.

Seminar content

The focus is on the ability "to support doctoral students in the final phase" and thereby the supervisor's formal and informal role in the completion of the doctoral studies and the transition to a career thereafter.

Areas that will be covered include the supervisor's role when it comes to, for example, the doctoral students' ability to developed self-awareness of the strengths and weaknesses that will affect their transition to the next career step, and the development of an action plan for their continued career.

Issues to be addressed are:

  • What strengths do I see in my doctoral student and how can I help the doctoral student use these in the final phase of the doctoral education?
  • How do I best support my doctoral student right now?
  • How do I guide doctoral student who intend to continue their career outside academia?
  • How does this differ from a continued career within academia?
  • What role does the supervisor have in the doctoral student's career planning?
  • What career-related support efforts are needed?
  • Is there a need for specific tools?
  • What can the University in general contribute with?
