Hybrid teaching means having students on campus and remotely simultaneously. This page gives you recommendations and advice on how to prepare to make hybrid teaching as meaningful as possible for all participants.
To be able to teach students both on campus and remote in Zoom a number of rooms have been equipped with the right technology, so called Zoom rooms. This means that you as a teacher can host a meeting directly from the room with images and sound, share presentations and record the meeting.
Book a Zoom room
This is how you book a room equipped with a Zoom room for hybrid teaching.
- Log in to TimeEdit, choose "Book rooms for virtual meetings"
- Click on the button ZoomRoom under the headline Meeting equipment.
- Filter by date and time to see available rooms and book a room. If possible, book the room 15 minutes before the meeting starts so you have time to test the equipment.

Conditions for hybrid teaching
When you need to juggle remote students as well as students in the classroom you face a number of pedagogical challenges to make the learning situation work. Below you will find the most important things to consider when hybrid teaching.
Preparations and implementation
- Get to know the room. Please note that you need to book the room to get access to it.
- Schedule a meeting in Zoom and share the link with your students, for example via the learning platform.
- Inform the students well in advance about the framework of teaching. For example if cameras should be on or off, when and how the students can ask questions, time frames and groups. If the groups are a mix of campus and remote students make sure you remind the campus students that they should bring their computers.
- Make sure you have enough time to set up in the room, connect to the Zoom meeting and test your equipment.
- Share your presentation on your own computer by using use the Share screen option.
- If you are teaching a large group of students it is a good idea to ask someone to monitor the chat section and list of participants. That way you have help monitoring what happens in the chat section and if someone has any questions. Another option is that you pause for questions with regular intervals.
Sound in the room
- Sound is very important. If hybrid teaching will be meaningful everything being said on campus must be heard by the remote students. Test the video and audio when everyone has joined the session to make sure that everything is working as it should.
- You may have to repeat questions and answers in the classroom to make sure everyone can hear them.
- If the campus students are supposed to work together with the remote students everyone should participate in the Zoom meeting. It is important that all the microphones and speakers are off in the classroom as there can sometimes be echo and audio feedback.
- All microphones should be muted except for the speakers microphone.
- As a teacher you must be visible for the remote students. It is important that you think about where the camera is placed and how you move about in the room.
- If you want to use the whiteboard in the classroom you need an external camera for your remote students. Place the camera in a good angle, preferably on a tripod. Think about where the light is coming from and make sure the whiteboard isn't back-lit.
There are many ways to increase interaction in hybrid teaching, as long as the students bring their own computers. We list a few of them below.
- Group discussions or beehives can be used in hybrid teaching. Try to mix remote and campus students to increase a sense of community. That requires that they all have computers and headsets.
- Use the poll function in Zoom or Mentimeter to interact and get feedback from the students. In Mentimeter you can ask questions, create word clouds and receive feedback and input from the students.
- Use the learning platform to support your hybrid teaching.
- If the students should cooperate digitally with Google docs, Padlet or other programs you should prepare these spaces and share the links via the chat function in the Zoom meeting. Be aware that links you share are not visible for persons joining the meeting at a later time. We recommend that you post your links in the learning platform as well. That way everyone can take part of them.

- If you, or any of the students, want to record the lecture you, or they, can do that via Zoom. Do not record via the Zoom room! If you choose to record it is important that all the students are aware of this and that they can turn off their camera if they do not wish to be shown in the recording. - If you want to write by hand or draw on a whiteboard you can. Zoom has a whiteboard you can share but to make the most out of it you can use a tablet with a touch pen.
- Connect a tablet to your computer and share the tablet screen through the regular Share screen option. You can also choose to connect to the meeting separately via a tablet and choose to share the desktop or other programs or apps.
