Increased level of assurance for university accounts

From 1 June 2023, all employees at Umeå University who are Ladok users must have at least assurance level AL2 on their university account (UMU-id) to log in and work in Ladok.

This change applies regardless of whether you are a study administrator, teacher, examiner or have any other authorisation in Ladok. These employees need to upgrade their university account to AL2 as soon as possible.

What does assurance level mean?

Umeå University is a part of the SWAMID federation and therefore needs to follow their rules for how accounts are treated. One of the rules is assurance level for accounts.

To keep it simple, the assurance level is an indication of how secure we are about who is in possession of a user account.

At the lowest level (AL1), it can be the person who owns the account that submitted the information themself. At the higher level (AL2), someone has done an identity check. An identity check could, for example, be for the user to log in with their BankID.

Most employees at Umeå University currently hold assurance level AL1, but more and more systems will require higher assurance levels in the future. This is due to the current security situation and increased demands on IT security, among other things.

Ladok first to demand assurance level AL2

At Umeå University, Ladok is the first system to require assurance level AL2. Ladok is an important economic system where, among other things, decisions about students' results are made and students' registrations are documented.

As of 1 June 2023, anyone who has an authorisation in Ladok must have upgraded their university account to assurance level AL2 in order to log in and work in the system. The employee does the upgrade themself and it will be possible to confirm their university account with BankID or Freja ID to upgrade to AL2. If these options are not possible for the employee, he/she can contact Service Desk.
