Ouriginal (formerly Urkund) is an automatic text-recognition system made for detecting, preventing and handling plagiarism, regardless of language. Ouriginal can be used as an integrated tool in a learning platform or as a web service.
Teachers and examiners can control plagiarism through Ouriginal. The primary way to use the system is in the learning platforms at Umeå university. Activate Ouriginal in the settings for Assignment in Canvas.
Ouriginal can also be used as a web service where the students will send their assignments via email. The teacher will handle the submissions via email or directly in Ouriginal's web application. If you do not use a learning platform for teaching and examination this is your option.
As a teacher you can login to the web application using your Umu-id on Ouriginal's website. (Please note! When you login, you must Login to Webinbox (Global) and enter Umeå university in the "Institutions" field.)

Ouriginal is an automatic text-recognition system. The system cannot decide whether a text is plagiarism or not without a teacher or examiner looking at Ouriginal's report. Ouriginal compares the submission to other source areas. Matching sources can have different causes. That is why it is important that you, as a teacher, review the report. If it is plagiarism it is not automatically cheating. The teacher assesses if a plagiarism is an attempt at cheating. Read more under the headline Suspected plagiarism or cheating.
Suspected plagiarism or cheating
If you discover a suspected plagiarism (matching sources) in a submission reviewed by Ouriginal you need to assess if this could be an attempt to deceive during examination.
