Equal opportunities

At the university, we work actively to ensure that staff and students are treated with respect, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation or age, for example. If you have experienced harassment or discrimination, you can contact, for example, your manager or your equal opportunities representative.

Equal opportunities is Umeå University's umbrella term for work on equality and gender, transgender identity or expression, ethnicity, religion or other belief, disability, sexual orientation or age. This means that we have a zero tolerance on harassment, discrimination or other insulting treatment of students, employees, collaborative partners and visitors.

As an employee, you have the responsibility to treat colleagues and students with respect and through your actions build a safe and unprejudiced workplace and study environment. Do I contribute to an inclusive culture at the workplace? If so, how? Is there anything in my behaviour that creates an exclusive workplace? How do I talk about and to people at my workplace? If you feel that you or someone else is being discriminated against on the grounds of gender, ethnicity, or anything else, you can contact your manager or equal opportunities representative.

Heads of department and heads of office have the responsibility to work actively in this area.

In support of the university's work on equal opportunities, there are representatives at departments and offices, administrators at the faculties, and for the university's general work there are coordinators at the Human Resources Office.

You can read more about our work on equal opportunities in the Work environment and equal opportunities policy (FS 1.1-1526-19).
