On arrival

Arriving in a new country can be challenging. New routines, unfamiliar rules and situations that might differ from your previous experience. It is of great importance for us that you get a smooth start here and a good introduction at your new workplace.

In addition to the necessary administrative tasks that need to be taken care of on arrival, there are also a lot of private things that needs to be arranged.

At the university

Your host Department is responsible for arranging your work space, along with an IT account that gives you access to the Internet, e-mail and the University server. If you are employed by the university, you can find more information about the employment, e.g. payment of salaries, hours of work, insurance and pensions, work environment and equal opportunity issues on the intranet.

Depending on your citizenship, how long you will stay and if you come alone or with a family there are different things to plan and prepare during your first weeks upon arrival.

Step by step - staying 1 year or longer

1. Register as a resident in Sweden
If you are staying longer than one year visit the Tax Agency to apply for a Swedish personal identity number

2. Apply for a Swedish ID-card
When you have received your Swedish id number you can apply for a Swedish ID-card. You need an ID-card to open a bank account in Sweden with full features.

3. Open a bank account
If you are in Sweden for a shorter period of time, it might be easier for you to use your bank account and bank card from your own country. You can withdraw cash in all ATMs in case you need to use cash. Paying bills with a credit card can be done at Forex Bank.
It is possible although to open a bank account with your coordination number. The account will have less features than a regular bank account. You can choose any bank you want in town. It is good to prepare all documents you need and book a meeting before.

4. Get a home insurance
As soon as you have your Swedish id number you should contact an insurance company and get a home insurance. This will give you additional protection when travelling and for things in your home.

5. Priovide information to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan)
For the Social Insurance agency to determine whether you are social insured in Sweden or not you should send them documentation so they can take a decision in your case.

Non EU citizens who can enter Sweden without a visa

If you have been granted a residence permit and can enter Sweden without a visa you should visit the Migration Agency as soon as possible after you have arrived to complete the application and leave your biometrics. Residence permit card

Step by step - staying less than 1 year

1. Apply for a coordination number
Your HR at the department will help you to fill in the forms to apply for a coordination number. You do not have to visit the Tax Agency.

2. Open a bank account
If you think it is necessary and you do not have another bank account it is possible to open a bank account without a Swedish id number. With your coordination number you  can get a bank account without any specific features (no internet banking, no bank id). You can choose any bank you want in town. It is good to prepare all documents you need and book a meeting.

3. Get a home insurance
As soon as you have got your coordination number you should contact an insurance company and get a home insurance. This will give you additional protection when travelling and for your things at home. With a coordination number you will get the basic home insurance.

4. Priovide information to the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan)
