Forskarfredag at Umevatoriet

21 September 2016

On Friday 30 September, it is high time for the annual science festival Researchers' Night – Forskarfredag. Researchers from Umeå University and the research institute of defence, FOI, will participate to increase interest in research, not least in children.

"This year's event in Umeå will make it possible to test Virtual Reality technology, understand how a computer really works and visitors will experience an exciting chemistry and physics show. The Department of Food and Nutrition will run the lab 'Sweet as candy' where visitors will be able to touch and taste food. FOI will experiment with detecting chemical substances together with children and Umeå Lunar Venture will talk about how Umeå University will become the first university on the Moon, and the programme has more to offer," says project manager Marianne Eik.

The aim of Forskarfredag is to show how much fun and how close to home research can be, it will challenge stereotype images of researchers and show how life as a researcher can be. Forskarfredag is a part of the European science festival Researchers' Night that is celebrated in over 280 European cities.

All activities during Forskarfredag are free of charge and are especially aimed at children and adolescents.

Forskarfredag is celebrated on the last Friday in September every year. In 2016, the event is expected to reach approximately 20,000 visitors in 30 Swedish locations. The theme of this year is "The human behind research". In collaboration with the Nobel Museum and the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company, UR, we get to know some of the people behind some great discoveries, how they became researchers and what inspired them.

Forskarfredag Umeå is organised by Umevatoriet, Umeå University and FOI.
