New course classification rules based upon subject content

31 January 2017

In December 2016, the rules for classification of courses to areas of education became invalid. The Vice-Chancellor has now decided that re-classification of courses should take place based upon subject content until new rules apply.

The change in the classification rules, Regler för klassificering av kurser till utbildningsområdet, have the consequence that defining subject content for a course should from now on take place based upon course content and its course literature in each respective course syllabus.

"It's good if heads of department and directors of studies are aware of this change in rules, particularly if new courses and programmes are being planned during 2017," says Deputy University Director Per Ragnarsson.

The change will apply until new rules have been established and decided upon by the Vice-Chancellor, which will take place no later than October 2017. At present, the Swedish Higher Education Authority, on behalf of the Swedish Government, is conducting an overview of course classifications at Swedish higher education institutions, which should be completed by 28 February. Umeå University will therefore await the view of the Government regarding course classifications before new rules are formulated.
