Warning for fake conferences and journals

24 January 2017

You may or may not have received emails wanting to sell conferences that do not exist. The objective of these emails has been to make people register and pay up front. Another type of email that is circulating is asking people to publish their research in new, unknown journals. The objective of those is to gain publication fees.

Most spam is caught by the Umeå University spam filter. Nevertheless, neither of these types of fake emails appears as regular spam in your inbox. Instead these make it through as the senders are not known to recognised spam filter servers.

Sören Berglund, head of the IT Office, calls for caution:

"When receiving emails from unknown senders about conferences and publications that may interest you, please check with your colleagues or other reliable sources if the email is legitimate. Let the check-up take its time as it's rarely as urgent as the email may suggest."
