Retired professors may apply for affiliation

21 February 2018

Permanently employed professors can after retirement use the title professor emeritus or emerita freely without the need for approval. However, a position as an affiliated professor emeritus or emerita provides further access to resources for continued work.

In order to carry on certain operations at the University, a retired professor should apply for a position as an affiliated professor emeritus or emerita. This is not equal to an employment at the University and no financial compensation is paid.

Although the title professor emeritus or emerita may be used without prior consent, it does not provide the right to participate in the University's operations, give access to an email address nor library resources. This is only available to those who have been approved as an affiliated professor emeritus or emerita.

"Umeå University welcomes retired professors to continue conducting operations at the University as this provides opportunities for the University to continue to safeguard these individuals' competence, experience and network of contacts," says Carl Larsson, the Planning Office.
