Due to the current situation regarding COVID-19, there may be reason for employees to work from home. Here you can read about IT tools and services that make it easier for those who need to work remotely, whether it's online teaching or virtual meetings with your colleagues.

Online teaching

Those work with instruction can use alternative teaching methods to reduce the number of physical meetings in order to reduce the risk of the spread of COVID-19. Taking your teaching online can be an option.

If you want to teach, lecture and meet with students online, we recommend using Zoom.

For those who have never used Zoom for teaching before, there is a guide you get started

Zoom for students - a guide

The operation of Zoom is coordinated with other higher education institutions in the Nordic countries. The increased demand for online education may lead to disruptions in service. Therefore, it is beneficial if as many people as possible use Teams and Skype for other types of digital meetings than teaching, and do not unnecessarily cause unmanagable usage of Zoom.

Have virtual meetings and online coordination

Even if you work from home, you can still have meetings with your colleagues. Umeå University has several systems that can be used for virtual meetings.

If you want to chat, have a meeting or video conference with colleagues within or outside the University, we recommend using Teams in Office 365 or Skype for Business.

Can't access all your systems when working remotely? Try VPN

Those of you who work remotely via your computer can access most systems and programmes. For example, you can access your email, Cambro, Moodle, Skype and much more.

If there is a system you cannot access from home, it may be because it is restricted to being used only within the campus area. You will then need to use a VPN.

If you are using a VPN to access a particular system/programme - be sure to exit the VPN when you have finished using the system/programme. This is to avoid unnecessarily increased usage of the VPN, which can slow down the system.
