New web archive and emergency failover site for umu.se

12 May 2020

To ensure that our external web umu.se is always accessible, ITS has developed a failover solution and a web archive for our web.

These two cloud-based services reduce the vulnerability of our web and enhances accessibility for our visitors in the event of a system crash or malfunction. Also, documents worth storing are searchable and processed in a structured manner in the web archive.

"I'm really pleased this is now in place," says Magnus Eriksson, IT manager and technical leader for umu.se, and one of the people involved in developing the services.

Failover site

The failover site is activated when umu.se for some reason is down, for instance due to an electric malfunction or planned maintenance. Visitors are automatically redirected to the failover site, which is a cloud copy of umu.se updated twice per week.

The site is a limited version of umu.se that can be surfed as usual, but misses a few of the regular services, for instance the search function and contact forms. However, searches through Google, for instance, still work as normal even when the failover site has been activated.

Web archive

The archive contains copies of umu.se through which employees and other interested parties can search and find content from previous versions of umu.se. The technical solution is based on the same technology as the fallback site, but copies to the archive are only made every four months.

The archive has a search function through which users can search for old content such as student welcome letters, documents, information about old courses, etc. And although the archive only appears to be in Swedish as of now, it still allows searches for English content.
