New policy for internationalisation

28 March 2022

A new policy for internationalisation has been decided by the Vice-Chancellor. The policy will function as a guideline from which faculties, departments and the University Administration can get support and inspiration to develop action plans and concrete goals adapted to each unit in the area of internationalisation.

The policy replaces the previous internationalisation strategy for education, FS 1.1.1-284-14. The focus has now been broadened and includes education as well as research and collaboration.

– Internationalisation is a prioritised area for Umeå University. Considering the world situation we are in today, it feels highly topical that our work can commence from this new policy, says Vice-Chancellor Hans Adolfsson.

The International Office has led the work with developing a new policy for internationalisation that includes the whole organisation.

– It's particularly exciting because we have undertaken a new approach. There is an appendix linked to the policy with in-depth information pages. The policy, which is based on Umeå University's vision, highlights four areas of development: Internationalisation at home, International collaborations, Experiences from abroad, and Hospitality that favors internationalisation. You can read more about these areas on the web and get inspired in your international work, for example to develop action plans, says Ingrid Svensson, Head of International Office.

Ingrid Svensson also points out that the appendix is not complete and encourages departments and units to contribute to the appendix and share good examples, research articles and references to make it full and inspiring.

– According to the The Swedish Higher Education Act, internationalisation must strengthen the quality of our work. To do that, we all need to come together.
