New support team for managers regarding discrimination and harassment

22 February 2023

During the past year, Umeå University has worked to create a safer work and study environment for employees and students. One part of this process is to launch Stödteam för trygg arbets- och studiemiljö (STAR (Support team for safe working and study environment)). The team's main objective is to support managers in matters concerning discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment and abusive differential treatment. This so that anyone who makes a report can feel that their situatione is handled in a professional manner.

If something occurs at work that makes you feel unsafe or exposed, or if you are treated abusively, you should at first hand contact you manager or head of department.

Your manager is responsible for investigating the incident or appointing someone who can investigate it. In Aurora, under the If something happens pages, you can read more about how to handle and report an unsafe or vulnerable situation and where you can find support.

If your manager needs support regarding your report, he/she contacts Stödteam för trygg arbets- och studiemiljö (STAR (Support team for safe working and study environment)). The purpose of the team is to ensure that the university has a professional and equal handling of cases related to harassment, sexual harassment or victimisation.

The team can give your manager advice and guidance, carry out investigations and also make suggestions for work environment measures while the investigation is ongoing and after the investigation is completed. In this way, the team acts as an indirect support for you.

Many of the measures comes from Karin Röding's report, Umeå University's management of mismanagement - 32 forward-looking proposals for change, which was presented in April 2022. Some other proposals for measures that have been implemented are:

The report can be read in its entirety on the university's website.
