All supervisors at the faculty are invited to get an overview of how research ethics is regulated and for discussions about how they, themselves, can instruct and guide their own doctoral students in research ethical issues.

– Identifying ethical problems in research and make adequate assessments isn't merely something to learn on a theoretical level. It is role models and the researchers' ongoing everyday discussions that make a difference, so it is important that we as supervisors are aware of our importance as role models and make good use of it, says Frank Drewes, Professor in computer science and chair of the faculty's Committee for doctoral studies.

Area that changes

The participants will also get an overview of where they can turn to at Umeå University for guidance regarding research ethics.

– It isn't just rules, regulations and the governance that change when it comes to research ethics, it is also an area where new issues and problems arise. We should never regard ourselves to be fully taught. We don't set boundaries for the furthering of knowledge in our respective research fields, the same goes for research ethics, says faculty coordinator Frankie Ekerholm.

During the afternoon the participants will also discuss what ethics entail within doctoral student supervision as well as examples of research ethic problems.

The supervisor day is organized by the Committee for doctoral studies.
