More accommodation will be rented by Umeå University from next summer

30 May 2023

If your department is recruiting international researchers, doctoral students and teachers, the Accommodation Service will have even better chances of providing accommodations from next summer. This thanks to a new rental agreement between the University and Balticgruppen covering the rent of a further 167 apartments from August 2024.

Umeå University is in international competition for the recruitment of researchers, doctoral students and students which is not unique. The challenge is shared with other universities in Sweden. Also, the housing shortage in Umeå can hamper recruitment.

The Accommodation Service is tasked with helping international incoming staff to find accommodation for their first two years in Umeå. All four faculties have raised the need to rent further accommodation as an issue; and now a new rental agreement with Balticgruppen is in place.

The first step in this endeavour includes 167 apartments ready for new tenants from August 2024. These apartments are currently under construction and are situated at Lasarettsbacken 5 on Campus Umeå. The ten-year rental agreement with Balticgruppen can be extended by five years at a time.
