Sustainable development – a topic for a new training for staff

30 May 2023

To reach the sustainable development goals, everyone at Umeå University needs to chip in. A new staff training on the subject intended for workplace meetings aims to raise awareness and encourage commitment and action. Maybe you will even recognise some of your colleagues in the videos.

The level of negative climate impact caused by Umeå University's operations must decrease. To achieve this, each and every one of us must contribute and make active choices in our work. As a result, a sustainability training material for staff has been produced for workplace meetings. The idea is for university staff to feel committed and ready to take action in sustainability issues. The material consists of four videos – with participating members of staff – aimed to shed light on sustainability from different angles. The videos also come with a set of questions to discuss, and accompanying table tents can also be ordered.

The training material covers four topics:

  • Sustainability work at Umeå University
  • Campus and premises
  • Procurement and purchase
  • Meetings and travels

These are the areas in which Umeå University's activities have the most negative effect on the climate and hence leaves the biggest room for improvement. The new staff training intends to raise involvement among members of staff and at workplaces across the University, and to encourage conscious decisions in the University's operations.

Information has expanded and been updated

Simultaneous to the launch of the staff training, the sustainable development information on the staff website has been updated and expanded upon. The web pages now gather the overall information relevant for university staff members and include guidance for departments and offices in their sustainability work. One page also contains support for teaching staff to develop their courses in a more sustainable direction. This information has been produced in collaboration with the Centre for Educational Development.
