Programs and licenses

If you need new software, please contact your license manager to find out if the software is available. In this way, you create good conditions for the university to be able to fulfill its agreements with the program providers.

Step 1 - Check if the software is available in Software Center/Self Service

For programs that many people at the university use, there are university-wide licenses (so-called site licenses). If your computer is client managed, you can use the Software Center (PC) and Self Service (Mac) services to download and install such programs yourself. If you are missing the service on your computer, send a case to Servicedesk.

If your computer is not client managed, you can install the software manually. Then ask your license manager or send a case to Servicedesk to get help.

Some programs found in the Software Center/Self Service require a license and are then labeled as "licensed software". If you try to download such a program, the system sends an email to the license manager to approve the installation before you can start it. The license manager then also reports the license to ITS.

Step 2 - Contact license manager

If the software is not in the Software Center/Self Service or if you want support in your process, you can contact your license manager.

The license manager has access to the university's common program server. This means that the person can check if there is a program that meets your needs on the program server. It is also good to contact your license manager when you need new software. If there are several people with the same needs, the license manager can coordinate the needs and be the contact person for ITS.

If there is no software on the application server that meets your needs, there is the option of purchasing software through negotiated agreements.

Step 3 – Check if it is possible to buy programs via procured agreements

If there is no software on the application server that meets your needs, there is the option of purchasing software through negotiated agreements.

In that case, you can contact it-inkop@umu.se at ITS to get help in investigating whether there are relevant agreements for the programs and licenses that your business needs.

Do not download software from internet

Avoid downloading software from internet. On the one hand, it poses an IT security risk, but there are also software products that appear to be free but still require a license. Some companies also conduct regular examinations and may require the university to pay fines for an incorrect license.
