What is multi-factor authentication?
Multi-factor authentication provides an added layer of protection when logging onto a system. When accessing a service, a user needs to provide a username and password as well as a third method of identification, for instance through an app on your mobile device or on a hardware token.
How do I activate multi-factor authentication?
The primary solution for employees and affiliates is to use Microsoft Authenticator through an app on a mobile device, or through a hardware token.

Why is multi-factor authentication necessary?
The advantage of multi-factor authentication is that it increases security to your accounts. It becomes harder for outsiders to log in and access your information since they need access to your Umu-id, password and your mobile device. Multi-factor authentication will be introduced to most university-wide systems and services in 2022. And to gain access to these accounts, you need to activate multi-factor authentication to your user account.
What services require multi-factor authentication?
Multi-factor authentication is required for logging into the services Protected Documents (Skyddade Dokument) and the Data Collection Platform (Datainsamlingsplattform). When you activate Microsoft Authenticator to your account, it will be activated on all Office 365 applications. In spring 2022, multi-factor authentication will be introduced to most university-wide systems and services.

What is the difference between Freja eID+ and Microsoft Authenticator?
Microsoft Authenticator is the primary "second factor" in the University's multi-factor authentication.

How often do I need to log in using multi-factor authentication?
The number of times you need to log into a system does not change. Multi-factor authentication means that you, beside entering your username and password also enter a multi-factor authentication when logging in.
For Office 365 apps on your mobile and computer, such as Teams and OneDrive, you only need to enter your multi-factor authentication about once per month.
Does multi-factor authentication affect what personal data I can process through services that use multi-factor authentication?
Even if multi-factor authentication increases security for the information being processed behind your login, you still need to check what information can be processed in each specific system.
