How to write grant applications, 3 ECTS

This course is open to late enrolment. Grab the opportunity to learn the craft of grant writing! The course runs from 20 November to 7 December 2018, full time.

Academic researchers face increasing competition for research funding. In particular, young researchers embarking on a career in science often find it difficult to compete for grants with already established and experienced colleagues. Learning to navigate the research funding system, and to understand funders and the rationales and purposes behind public and private funding schemes, carries a cost in time as well as effort. The course "How to write grant applications" is designed to provide young researchers with a head start in that respect, and to provide tools and knowledge necessary for competitive grant writing.

Objectives: to present course participants with the tools that enable them to seek out funding opportunities and understand the different research funding systems; to provide instruction on how to prepare and structure a high quality research grant application, thus increasing chances for success.

Learn how to:

  • Understand the policy background and rationale for public and private research funding;
  • Understand how research funding procedures and processes are designed and conducted;
  • Understand the different characteristics, objectives, and competences of the actors in the research funding system;
  • Develop a strategy for research funding;
  • Find and select funders to approach;
  • Structure a research application and present relevant information with regard to funders´ objectives, content of call texts and background documents;
  • Understand quality criteria and other information requested from application writers;
  • Extract the required information from calls for applications, interpret it, and use it to formulate a well-structured research description;
  • Adapt language and style in proposal writing.

Form of instruction

Course activities include lectures, group exercises and discussions, seminars, and computer sessions. Group exercises and computer sessions are compulsory. Lectures and discussions are held in English.
