Vice-Chancellor Lena Gustafsson has in co-operation with the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation appointed Tommy Olsson as director of the new Wallenberg molecular medicine centre at Umeå University. Tommy Olsson is Professor and Chief Physician at the Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine.

The centre will focus mainly on broad molecular medical research on cancer, metabolic diseases like diabetes, diseases in the brain and nervous system, and severe infections – fields acknowledged as strong research areas at Umeå University.

"It is gratifying to have appointed Tommy Olsson as director of the new centre. Tommy's vast knowledge and experience in the area is required in order to get the positive start and development of the centre we have hoped for," says Lena Gustafsson.

"The comprehensive venture over this centre for molecular research means we will have a good chance of recruiting young and excellent researchers and support their development in becoming leading molecular medicine research leaders."

According to Tommy Olsson the new centre will lead to new opportunities for border-crossing research and thanks to the funding they have been given the opportunity to recruit up-coming leaders in basic and clinical research.

"An optimal way of utilizing the opportunities given in the shape of directories, biobanks and other research-related infrastructure enables a strong start for our centre," Tommy Olsson adds.

"Other than that, this will lead to valuable cooperation with other molecular medical centres in Sweden and with SciLifeLab to increase our international competitive power."
