Police presence around campus no cause for worry

The sight of police officers on and around campus is not due to any particular threat, but is part of the police's increased presence in public places in the community, which includes Umeå University. This is according to statement by police spokesperson Peder Jonsson.

"We have no ongoing effort at the university. At the present time, we have more officers than usual on duty in the community. Because the university is situated where there are plenty of people, it is quite normal that we are there," says Peder Jonsson, spokesperson for the Police in Umeå.

Jörgen Sandström, director of security at Umeå University, says that he has not become aware of any specific threat. He adds that even if extra police visibility can cause worry, their presence generally adds to greater safety and security.

"It is quite natural that the police are here on campus because there are so many people in movement here, especially in the mornings when there are less people in the city centre," says Jörgen Sandström.

Police in Sweden announced on Wednesday that there will be increased presence in public places around the country.

More information about activities on campus are available on Umeå University's facebook and twitter accounts.
