Grants for teaching sabbatical

16 November 2023

The Strategic Board for Education (UN) announces funding for a teaching sabbatical, thus enabling teachers the opportunity to apply for a 3-12 month long sabbatical at a University abroad that conducts high-quality education, to commence during 2024. Apply no later than April 1.

The sabbatical aims to advance education at first and second cycle levels at the Faculty of Medicine, through internal pedagogical development or pedagogical development work. Examples of activities include self-teaching, co-teaching, and auscultation. Furthermore, activities such as acquiring new pedagogical methods/tools, exchange of experiences, development of pedagogical collaborations with other higher education institutions and part of educational research projects, are also included.

To be eligible to apply, the applicant must have a permanent position as an actively professor or associate professor ("universitetslektor"), who are experienced course coordinators or have equivalent pedagogical responsibilities, and have experience in pedagogical development. The application is made in consultation with the Head of Department, and in cases where relevant, with the head of division at the Region.

The Strategic Board for Education recommends allocation of grant only in cases where there is a clear:

● plan for the stay,
● justification for stay and its length,
● description of how the individual, the program/course and the Faculty's education at first and second cycle levels benefit from a sabbatical.

The department receives GU resources for the corresponding time, i.e., for the proportion of grants in the teacher salary funds, for the teachers concerned, during the sabbatical period. This release a GU resource that the department can use to fund a replacement within the teaching assignment for the period of the sabbatical. The remaining part of the salary cost during the sabbatical is financed the department´s allocated teacher salary funds for the teacher concerned. The department is also allocated funds to cover travel costs for one (1) return trip to the intended university. The granted funds are transferred to the department corresponding to actual costs for salary and return trip and include overhead costs at the university common and faculty common levels.

The department concerned is responsible for establishing a URA agreement for the applicant who receives a GU resource for the sabbatical. For a shorter stay, a business trip may be sufficient. The HR specialists at the Faculty Office can assist with any questions. Financing of other costs for the sabbatical, including overhead costs at the departmental common level, beyond what is granted by the Strategic Board for Education (UN), is done by the applicant´s pedagogical research funds and/or by the department, after the decision of the head of department.

Please note that university teachers with employments combined with clinical employments ("förenade anställningar") - dentist or doctor- have opportunity to apply for retaining their clinical remuneration ("kliniska arvode") during the sabbatical, after the approval of the head of division at the Region concerned ("verksamhetschef"). The application is sent to the ALF committee or to the TUA committee after the Strategic Board for Education (UN) has granted the applicant a GU resources to carry out a sabbatical. The application is sent to FouKansli@regionvasterbotten.se and to the secretary of the ALF committee or the TUA committee. If the application is approved, the ALF committee/TUA committee will also reimburse the relevant clinic´s cost of employing a substitute for the clinic time when the applicant is absent.

The application must include:

1. Project plan signed by the applicant including:
a. the purpose of the stay,
b. expected outcome of how the individual, the program/course and faculty benefit from the stay,
c. the applicant's institutional affiliation and employment, including any combined clinical employment,
