Doctoral students rate doctoral education highly

14 April 2016

Since 2011, a survey has been carried out yearly to help ensure the quality of the doctoral education. The contents include questions on gender, age, social conditions and parents' level of education besides questions on attitudes towards scientific environment, work environment and content of the education.

This year's survey had a response rate of 69 per cent, which can be compared to 80 per cent in the previous year.
"This decrease is something that needs further analysis," says Lena Holm, planning coordinator.

Two years ago, Umeå University added its own five questions regarding learning targets. According to half of the doctoral students' responses, they believe they possess adequate knowledge in applying for research funding. On the question of whether they have adequate knowledge in "performing qualified tasks in an own business", the number reduces from 48 to 39 per cent, which is by far the largest single drop compared to the previous year.

A majority recommends the doctoral education

At large, the differences between previous years are few and small. An evident majority considers themselves to obtain deep and current knowledge within their fields and of the methods used therein. In comparison to previous years, researchers in general declare an increased knowledge of scientific methods and an improved ability to plan, review and assess research. A majority recommends the doctoral education at Umeå University to others. Half of the respondents considered the scientific and work environments favourable.

Stressful but low use of sick leave

The survey results confirm the notion of the research education as a stressful period but a comparably small proportion of respondents had experienced any continuous absence due to illness. Nevertheless, the respondents did not agree that sufficient information was provided about the knowledge and competence the education should lead to, or on the doctoral students' obligations and rights.

The measures for this year's survey will be assessed in 2017 as evaluations take place every three years.
