Masterclass in Climate and Health

11 November 2019

There is an increasing understanding that climate change will have profound, mostly harmful effects, on human health. How can health professionals prevent and handle these challenges? Welcome to a Masterclass in Climate and Health 6-8 December.

Through this Masterclass, participants will gain background knowledge on the topic of Global Health & Climate Change. After a brief introduction to global health, including human rights and the sustainable development goals, we will dive into specific topics. With these sessions, we aim to address direct and indirect climate effects on global health, whilst presenting these in a broader context with international, economic, social, political and environmental perspectives.

Several experts in the field have been invited to bring you the latest updates – their names will be published closer to the event. The Masterclass will also bring the discussion to the next level, through interactive workshops and think tanks, in order to create more concrete action plans, policy suggestions, etc. The main purpose is to create a platform for you as young stakeholders to get together, gain tools, network and subsequently empower you to act on Global Health & Climate Change.

The participants who have applied will soon be selected and informed. Stay tuned!

We are happy to announce our first speaker, Maria Nilsson! Associate Professor Maria Nilsson is a research fellow at the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health, Umeå University; a social scientist with a PhD in epidemiology and public health sciences. Her main interest is policy and adaptation research in "Climate change and global health".

Dr Nilsson was one of the main editors for the 2015 "Lancet Commission – Health and climate change: policy responses to protect public health" and co-leads the working group on adaptation, planning and resilience for health in the annual follow up till 2030; "The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change".

Annually, The Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change release a report, and this year we will host the Swedish official launch event of the 2019 report at the Masterclass!
