Mobile contract through new supplier from 11 June

15 May 2020

From June 2020, Telia is Umeå University's new mobile network operator. If you have a mobile contract, you will receive a new SIM card prior to the changeover. The two topmost advantages of changing to Telia are: better signal and mobile data allowance.

Transitioning to Telia on 11 June should be seamless for everyone with a mobile contract through the University. All you need to do is to swap the SIM card in your phone on 11 June. You will keep your phone number.

How to make the SIM card swap

Every department, office or equivalent will have an appointed responsible contact person who ensures that the SIM cards are distributed to everyone concerned at the department, office.

Those with a mobile contract will receive a text message on two occasions – on 25 May and 10 June – to be reminded about swapping the SIM cards on 11 June.

If you have Skype for business or a landline phone, you do not need to take any actions – the changeover will be made on your behalf.

New contract offers more mobile data

Changing to Telia will have great advantages: better signal and more mobile data, and a package offer for international phone usage.

The new standard package includes 10GB of mobile data, which is a big increase from the 2GB included in the current standard package from Tele2. The Telia contract will also include unlimited calls and text messages/multimedia messages in Sweden and in the EU/EEA. The Telia contract is somewhat more expensive, but the extra cost is only SEK 8 per month and contract.

Contracts to choose between

When swapping to Telia, all current contracts will be automatically converted to Telia contract package 1. There is one more contract containing 100GB of mobile data allowance. To order contract package 2, special needs are required, for example often working remotely (the current COVID-19 situation aside). An order of contract package 2 must be approved by the head of department, office or equivalent.

This table shows the differences between Tele2 package 1 and Telia package 1 in more detail:

Tele2 contract 1 contains an allowance renewed every month Telia contract 1 contains an allowance renewed every month
  • 500 minutes of calls
  • Calls to +46 (0)77-numbers, SEK 40 is included

Cost for department, office or equivalent = SEK 83 per month and contract plus potential addition. Cost for department, office or equivalent = SEK 91 per month and contract plus potential addition.

In addition, there is also a contract for mobile data only and extra SIM cards. The supplier has, according to the agreement, right to charge for the cost of moving current contracts. This cost will be split between current contracts in the form of a setup fee of SEK 360. This fee will not be charged to new contracts signed at a later date.

Questions and answers regarding the Telia changeover

What contract will I get?

Regardless of what Tele2 contract you currently have, you will automatically get contract package 1 with Telia. Your supervisor decides of any deviations from this standard.

How do I get the new SIM card?

Each department, office or equivalent has a contact person appointed to pick up the SIM cards at Infocenter and distribute them to the contract holders.

What will happen on 11 June?

On 11 June, Umeå University changes mobile telephone operators to Telia. You should have received a new SIM card and inserted it into your mobile phone.

What happens if I do not insert a new SIM card on 11 June?

Your current contract has expired. You cannot make calls, use mobile data or send text messages until the new SIM card has been inserted.

From what date can I insert the SIM card?

On the morning of 11 June from 07:00.

Why must all contracts be replaced at the same time?

The mobile phone operator has technical restrictions, which means that the changeover must be made manually. A collective changeover will provide the best result and speed up the transition.

Why can the SIM cards not be sent straight to the contract holders' home addresses?

The University cannot assume that the addresses listed in the internal staff administrative system Primula are completely accurate. Neither can we be certain that all staff are now at their home address and will receive the SIM card on time. Hence, we have made the assessment that the most secure and fastest way of ensuring that everyone receives their SIM card is to go through an appointed responsible contact person. This contact person secures the further distribution of SIM cards and will get back to us if there should be any problems distributing a SIM card.

From when will the responsible contact person be distributing the SIM cards?

The contact person can collect the SIM cards from Infocenter from 4 June.

What happens if the contact person cannot distribute a SIM card, for instance if the contract holder is abroad?

The contact person is recommended to contact Teleservice who will advice on a suitable solution to the problem.
