A digital twin of Campus Umeå is underway

6 December 2021

Between January and March 2022, Akademiska Hus will be 3D scanning all Campus Umeå buildings – in collaboration with Umeå University. This is an important step in creating a digital twin of Campus Umeå, a project which will hopefully result in improving energy efficiency, optimising utilisation of premises and provide better service.

In order to create a digital twin of Campus Umeå, a virtual representation of the premises is being completed. This is done by scanning all rooms and spaces using laser. The digital model will then be filled with information and linked to property management systems and data sources. The end product will enable users to move around the facilities, in a way similar to Google street view.

The tool is to be used both for administration purposes and for improvements of premises and to optimise utilisation of premises. Akademiska Hus hopes that this will make use of current premises smarter, improve energy optimisation and lead to more efficient service.

It will primarily be Akademiska Hus, the Property Management Office and the Campus Services Office that will have access to the digital twin. At a later stage, the digital twin may also be used in other contexts.

Three-dimensional scanning of buildings

Between January and March 2022, all rooms and spaces on Campus Umeå will be scanned and photographed. Please note that certain parts of the university with sensitive operations will be excluded.

To carry out the scan, Akademiska Hus will use two companies: TerraTec will be in charge of scanning and Zynka BIM will manage the project. Scanning takes place in close collaboration with Umeå University, primarily the Property Management Office and the Campus Services Office.

To optimise the final product, scanning will take place when as few people as possible are in the premises. As soon as the time plan is complete, you will receive information on what dates your building will be scanned.

A person rigged with a camera will scan the surroundings using laser and take high-resolution photos that afterwards will be compiled into a 3D model.

When the time comes for your building to be scanned, please consider the following

• Provide unlimited access to all spaces of your premises.
• Ensure that the premises have been tidied.
• Ensure that blinds, curtains and doors are open.
• Remove or cover sensitive information such as documents, photographies or similar that you do not wish to be documented.

Sensitive information

If there is sensitive material that cannot be removed or covered, please make sure to send notification of this in ample time before the scanning of your building to environmental coordinator Lisa Redin at the Property Management Office.

Before the digital twin is published, the system supplier together with Umeå University will examine all photos to ensure that no personal data or other sensitive information is published. Any individuals visible in the photos will be anonymised.
