Temporary stop in receiving zipped attachments via mail

16 November 2021

From 16 November at 15:00, attachments in the form on zipped files will automatically be removed from emails sent to your email address. Students, colleagues or people outside of Umeå University sending such zipped files will receive a message stating that attaching zipped files is currently not allowed.

The stop is due to ongoing scam attempts on both national and international level using email attachments. Our email supplier is working urgently towards a solution.

Other attachment types are not affected

Currently, only attachments sent as zipped files – no other file types – are affected. But this may change. Consequently, you are urged to be alert to emails containing unexpected or unusually named attachments, or attachments that in other ways make you suspicious.

Please forward any such suspicious emails to abuse@umu.se, and the IRT function at ITS will assist in assessing the email.

Student emails are not affected

Umeå University student email accounts are managed through O365 and is not affected by this temporary stop. However, attachments in zipped formats sent to members of staff will still not reach the recipient during this stop. If students attempt to send a zipped file, they will receive a message stating that attaching zipped files is currently not allowed.

Unclear time frame

It is currently uncertain for how long this temporary stop will be in place. The necessity depends on how fast the email supplier can fix the vulnerability issues. As soon as a solution is in place, ITS will install it and revoke the stop.
