Open Research meeting – Research Funding and Innovation

On November 11 the Faculty of Medicine organized an Open Research Meeting, on the theme research funding and innovation.

Before lunch, Madeleine Durbeet-Hjalt, Secretary General for Medicine and Health at the Swedish Research Council, Jonas Oldgren, Secretary General for Clinical Research introduced future plans within the Swedish Research Council.

Niklas Arnberg, member of the Swedish Research Council's board, spoke about future research funding opportunities.

Richard Lundmark, chair of the Faculty of Medicine's Council for Research Infrastructure (M-RIS) also presented funding opportunities within infrastructure.

Parallel sessions

During the afternoon, the participants were offered parallel sessions on different research funders and what to consider in particular when writing a competitive application. Three consecutive sessions focused on innovation. An important part was meeting each other, which many expressed their appreciation for. Carla Huanca, PhD student in Epidemiology and Global Health, pointed out that it was the first time she heard about the Swedish Cancer Society and that the research meeting inspired her to find several research funders. Ulf Ahlgren, professor at UCMM, emphasized that the day offered interesting lectures and that it was rewarding to meet colleagues.

Open Research meeting 2023 - research infrastructures

Anna Arnqvist, Associate Dean for Research at Faculty of Medicine, summarized the meeting:

- We are happy that we were able to welcome several representatives who have central roles with Swedish research financiers to Umeå. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated and contributed with presentations and fruitful discussions.

- The next Open research meeting will be arranged together with the Faculty of Science and Technology on March 15, and the theme will be research infrastructures.
