The work on gender-based vulnerability is recognised

24 May 2022

Last Friday, a national and a local report on sexual harassment and gender-based vulnerability in academia was released and on Saturday, Västerbottens-Kuriren won the Guldspaden ("Golden Shovel") award from the Swedish Association of Investigative Journalism, in the category for smaller newspapers, for the series of articles on sexual harassment at Umeå University.

"Both the reports and Västerbottens-Kuriren's investigative reporting help us to keep these important issues up to date," says Hans Adolfsson, Vice-Chancellor of Umeå University.

Since the end of last year, the university management has had a prioritised focus on creating conditions for a safer study and workplace free from harassment, sexual harassment, and bullying. One of the reasons for the prioritisation is the light that Västerbottens-Kuriren's reporting shed on the issue.

"Even if we in fact found it difficult accessing all the nuances in such complicated issues and commenting on all the details in the articles in Västerbottens-Kuriren, since it is about individual personnel matters, I would like to point out that our strong local media in Sweden is a cornerstone of democracy which we should defend and appreciate," says Hans Adolfsson. "We also think highly of the research reports that were published last Friday because they will help us prioritise in the work ahead."

In addition to the ongoing work at Umeå University in this area, several measures have been taken to create a better climate and ensure a safe university. You can read more about this on the page "For a safer workplace that lives and breathes the basic values."

"I think the most important thing we should all take with us from the reports and the investigative journalism is that gender-based vulnerability occurs at our university and that we all need to put a lot of effort into the work we have already begun. Only together can we create change."
