It was in June that Umeå University launched a fundraiser so that students from Ukraine could get help with living expenses. The Temporary Protection Directive provides that students from Ukraine do not have to pay tuition fees at Swedish universities. However, they are not eligible for student scholarships or loans, which makes it difficult for students to finance their living expenses, such as food and accommodation. Now Ukrainian students can apply for grants for the fall semester 2022.

All funds collected are used in their entirety to help students who are in Umeå. The funds will be distributed twice a year. The donations will be evenly allocated among all eligible applicants in relation to the number of credits of studies during the fall semester 2022. The grant can however not exceed 11500 SEK per month.

When the university started the fundraising drive, Vice-Chancellor Hans Adolfsson said that "It feels very good to do this during a difficult situation that has totally knocked the feet of Ukrainian students. Our role as a university is to defend core academic values, the freedom of universities, research and higher education, to defend democratic discourse and critical thinking. This initiative is one way to contribute to that."

It is still possible to donate money that Ukrainian students can apply for the spring semester 2023.
