Use secure cloud services

    Despite the fact that the European Commission recently made a decision that means greater possibility of transferring personal data to the United States, Umeå University urges caution. The recommendation is to only use the services where we have agreements with providers that are connected to the new transatlantic framework for data protection. In this way, you can be sure that the service processes personal data in an appropriate way.

    On July 10, 2023, the EU Commission decided on the so-called "adequate level of protection" for the United States. The decision means that in some cases it is now possible to transfer data to organizations and companies in the USA (which, among other things, offer so-called cloud services). The adequacy decision only applies if the receiving organization is covered by the "EU-US Data Privacy Framework". US organizations will be able to join the data protection framework by complying with a detailed set of privacy obligations.
