Umeå University is investing in translation and increasing the amount of English information available. Intense translation work is ongoing and the 2022 annual report and webpages to support education are just two examples of content that have been translated into English in the last year. Communicating and providing information in English is an important part of recruiting and retaining international students and staff, and to collaborate internationally. This is why the Communications Office is now gathering tips of content that needs translating, and helps to get it in place. This includes translation between Swedish and English, in both directions. So, please take this opportunity to review your department or office's content and get in touch. That way, we can help make sure your content gets translated. "Umeå University has an enormous amount of information. Even if we are fully aware that there are gaps in our English content, we need help to find the content that will really make a difference," says Anna Lawrence, translator at the Communications Office, who manages the translation support.
Umeå University has inhouse translators who, beside translating, coordinate the University's English terminology and support employees in issues related to language use. Umeå University also has its first own framework agreement for the purchase of translation and proofreading services from external suppliers since March.
"Over the last year, we have added around fifty English policy documents to the legal framework together with lots of web information. An abridged version of the 2022 annual report is one example. The pages 'Support for students' on the staff website is another. And we continuously add more English content to support students and staff in their work," says Anna Lawrence.
