More than 1,100 students registered on the programmes

19 September 2023

The autumn semester has started and a few weeks into the semester, 814 new students have been registered on the faculty's beginner programmes, 196 in the foundation year programme and 132 on the master's programmes. This is a marginal decrease compared to 2022, when a total of 1 150 new students were registered at the same time.

Slightly fewer students have been registered as beginners on the faculty's education programmes.

After a peak during the pandemic years, both in applications and registrations for the Faculty of Science and Technology's programmes, the numbers have dropped slightly this year. 1 401 first hand applications came in, compared to 1 506 in the peak year 2021. 814 new programme students were registered, compared to 846 in autumn 2021.

Compared to 2022, the Master of science programmes in engineering show both increases and decreases in the number of registered beginners. Engineering and management and Engineering physics are increasing, Technical chemistry engineering has been added and notes 24 registered, Computing science and engineering is unchanged, while others are decreasing. A total of 369 students have been registered, in 2022 they were 376.

Fewer bachelor of engineering students

Bachelor of science engineering programmes decrease from 131 to 122 registered beginners. Mechanical engineering increases from 35 to 43, Electronic- and computer/medical engineering from 12 to 14, while the other three programmes decrease.

Bachelor programmes decrease from 187 to 173. Of these, Computing science increases from 66 registered in 2022 to 71 this year, Life Science from 27 to 28 and Industrial Design remains unchanged at 15, while others decrease. Environmental health has already decided on a zero intake.

The Architecture programme increases from 81 to 85 registrants, the five-year Pharmacy programme from 22 to 25 and the Bachelor programme decreases from 41 to 40. The foundation year programme increases from 187 to 196 registrants. Master's programmes increase from 119 to 132.

Older students on distance programmes

The proportion of women and men on the entry-level programmes fluctuates, but shows an overall negative trend for women. In 2019, the proportion of women was 41.8 per cent, in 2020 it was 38.8 per cent, in 2021 it was 37.5 per cent, in 2022 it was 38.0 per cent and this year 39.5 per cent. The highest proportion of women are on the Pharmacy programmes, and the highest proportion of men on the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and the Master of Science in Computing Science Engineering.

In terms of age, students are on average older on distance learning programmes. For example, the average age of new entrants to Bachelor of Engineering programmes is 24.1 years, but if Electrical power engineering is excluded, the average age drops to 23.0 years.
